An area’s unemployment rate indicates the percentage of the region’s workforce that is jobless, actively seeking a job, and currently available for work. Those that have been temporarily laid off are also classified as “unemployed,” and thus factor into a region’s unemployment rate. This measure is indicative of the state of the job market in an area.
