The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a program that provides food assistance to low-income households. The amount of people receiving SNAP benefits in a community is generally an indicator of a community’s needs and the state of food security within, with higher rates of participation signaling that the community is forced to choose between food and other necessities, such as adequate housing or transportation. The data shows that Louisiana’s North and South-Central regions are the communities with the highest rates of residents receiving SNAP benefits. In addition, SNAP Application data reveals how many households applied for SNAP benefits and how many of these were either certified to receive benefits or rejected. The data indicates stable levels of applications and certifications with a notable spike immediately after the start of shutdown measures in response to the outbreak of COVID-19 in Louisiana.
