Poverty in Louisiana
This page contains two dashboard examining poverty rates in Louisiana. The first shows the overall poverty rate—the percent of the population below 100% of the federal poverty threshold—across parishes and DCFS regions. This dashboard also allows the user to filter by race and ethnicity. The second dashboard shows poverty rates by different age groups.
The federal poverty threshold (FPT) is a measure used by the United States census to define poverty for a statistical purpose. Despite varying needs, costs of living, and considerations across the nation, the measure is the same nationwide. Despite this, the poverty threshold can still be a useful indicator of the amount and degree of hardship in an area and can give a glimpse into the ability of those within a community to meet their basic needs.
